Nature Mentor Training Weekend - Learn Bush Skills So You Can Teach Others
Sep 20-22, Bhundoo, South Coast NSW
Sep 20-22, Bhundoo, South Coast NSW
At Bluegum Bushcraft we are passionate about helping mentors find their wings. We are passionate about helping all people be at home in the wild. This workshop is designed to combine the two. It's the first step in a lifetime journey, and we're honoured that you're thinking about taking a step with us.
The Nature Mentor Training Weekend is designed for anyone who wishes to deepen into their own bushcraft and primitive survival skills, moving toward mentoring others into nature connection. Maybe you're a parent wishing to help your kids enjoy more bush time and get outside and off devices. Perhaps you're a teacher wishing to bring more outside play into your classes. Maybe you just love being in nature and you want to learn some bushcraft skills. Whether you have a clear goal of mentoring others or you're just curious about how to be at home in the wild, this weekend is a rich resource to get you in touch with the wisdom of your deepest ancestors.
In these weekends we will meet you where you are at. Whether a fresh beginner or a seasoned veteran, these training weekends will help initiate, deepen or finesse your journey with nature connection, bushcraft and survival skills, and empower your ability to mentor others along their own journey.
The Nature Mentor Training Weekend is about skills rather than theories. We go into the nuts and bolts of Nature Mentoring, and to do that, you need to get your hands dirty! We'll run you through the basics of our Bluegum Bushcraft Rewild curriculum. Once you have your own dirt time, you can pass on your knowledge to others, and we show you how to do that as well.
The weekend has two parts:
First off... let's look at your skills in a way that's fun and real, where you learn by doing.
Rather than spoon-feed a lot of easily forgotten information, we will help catalyse and support your learning journey, using time-honoured mentoring principles.
Starting with your current level of experience and skill, we will help you to sharpen your questions, push your abilities and expand your awareness and comfort zone beyond what you thought possible. In order to be able to be a powerful Nature Mentor, we need you to have a real and embodied relationship with nature, and with the skills and awareness that make it possible to be at home in nature.
We delve into the full Bluegum ReWild Curriculum, and help you find your passions and overcome any obstacles to learning and deepening.
The five branches of the Bluegum ReWild Curriculum are:
Monkey Body (natural movement practices)
Hunter-Gatherer Hand (crafting natural materials to procure shelter, water, fire, food)
Tracker’s Eye (ecoliteracy - reading the book of nature)
Jedi Mind (mindfulness and awareness practices)
Protector’s Heart (cultivating connection)

What is mentoring and how do I do it?
Mentoring is a skill, and it is one that we are constantly honing and developing through our camps and Bush School programmes.
We will step inside the mind of the mentor and give you a road map for helping others to deepen their natural connections. Using several different modalities and approaches we will give you the tools you need to assess where your students at - what their interests are, what inspires them, and how to help them grow from there. Then you get to put it into practice and find the way of mentoring that suits you best, helping others to connect to nature in a way that is as fun, easy and seamless as possible, so that they feel a sense of personal accomplishment that comes from internally motivated learning.
At Bluegum, in all our Rewilding programmes we use coyote mentoring, where instead of answering questions directly, we ask further questions to get students to think and solve problems, building their resilience and internal authority. You'll learn coyote mentoring in two ways; by learning yourself through this style of mentoring, and by mentoring each other.

In our journey to learn how to mentor others we will draw on various frameworks including:
Jon Young’s 8 Shields model of learning/mentoring
Joe Griffen and Ivan Tyrell’s Human Givens approach to human health
Lee Trew’s Rapport Based Relating for making human connections and resolving conflicts and other tricky situations you’ll encounter as a nature mentor, plus all his amazing ninja skills which he has been passing on for 8 years in the Bluegum Bushcraft Rewild Tribe / Rewild Your Child programmes and camps.
Gina Chick's lifetime of wisdom facilitating and holding groups through personal transformation, and training mentors for years as Camp Mama on the Rewild Your Child / Rewild Tribe camps.
And like all Gina and Lee's workshops, the content will evolve depending on the needs of the group and the skills that you already have. We will work with you, helping bring out your strengths and look at ways to overcome your challenges. Whether you are learning how to move through the bush without causing ripples, understand what the birds are saying, use a knife safely, or are starting on your journey with making fire, shelter, cordage; we want to help you go deeper. There are so many ways we can explore wild nature, and this weekend will help you begin to discover what your journey is going to be, and how to move more fully into sharing your skills with others.
This weekend is of course an introduction, as this is a lifelong path of learning and growing. It is an essential part of our year long Nature Mentor Training programme, and if you are interested in going along this path, this workshop is a great place to dip your toe in the water and meet the students who are committed to the ongoing Training. We'll be having a new intake for the 12 month NMT early next year.
