January Camps and New photo Gallery

7/11/2014

Picture
Hi Everyone!

Just a quick note to say that there is a new photo gallery on our website - pictures from our last camp.

There are a ton of awesome shots - Gi is a bit of a whizz on the camera.

Check them out here:

http://www.bluegumbushcraft.com.au/spring-2014.html

And, if you like what you see (or what you remember, if you were there) then get in touch to book your place on our ReWild Tribe/ReWild Your Child January camps.

This holiday we are running two weeks, back to back:

Jan 12 - 16 and 19 - 23 (that's Mon - Fri both weeks)

Several folks have already booked for both weeks (- families are welcome to stay on the property for the weekend in between camps).

There are currently places available, but if all the usual Bluegum tribe book-in we may have to start a waiting list...

(Due to several cost increases at our end, ReWild Your Child is now $300 per child for the week. We don't like having to change the price, but we hope you agree that's still great value for a five-day program :)

So let us know now if you want to join the Tribe this January!

We look forward to seeing you in the bush :c)

ABC's Life at 9  -  featuring us!

You can still see ABC documentary
Life at 9 - featuring Lee and Zeah of Bluegum Bushcraft - on iView until Aug 28th. The bushcraft activities are in the final 7min of the first episode (at 51min 45sec), then interspersed throughout the second episode. We really enjoy the series, and think director/writer Jen Peedom, does a great job.

You can view the first episode here:

ReWild Tribe in 4 weeks!

Hi Everyone!

With Winter coming to an end, and our Spring family-camp ReWild Tribe now only four weeks away (Sept 22-26), we thought we'd let you know that there are still a few places left (but only a few - so let us know if you're interested).

http://www.bluegumbushcraft.com.au/rewild-tribe.html

And we've made some changes to the way we run our ReWild Your Child program. From now on (in response to requests from a lot of parents who wanted to join in on the fun), we are running ReWild your Child fromwithin the family camp ReWild Tribe.

http://www.bluegumbushcraft.com.au/rewild-your-child.html

This means that the whole family gets to come camping together in spectacular bush surroundings, and then the kids get taken on a bushcraft/nature-connection adventure from 9am till 1pm each day. So parents and bubs get to chill out in camp, explore the river or drink tea and relax by the campfire, while the kids get thoroughly exhausted and come back with stories to share.

We've run it this way a couple of times now, and it really works well!

Another thing that has changed is the price - we're pushing to make rewilding as affordable as possible and it's now only $250 per child for the ReWild Your Child program, plus a $100 camping fee per family. That means you could take two kids on a mentored family holiday for a week and pay $600 all up. That's pretty good!

We've updated the website with info on all these changes, plus heaps of new photos and photo galleries from the past camps. (Please let us know if there are any glitches or inconsistencies - the changes just went up yesterday)

Whew! That's all for now - thanks for your time.

Let us know what you think of the changes and the new website pics.

And, as always, we look forward to seeing you in the bush!

Bluegum on TV

11/11/2013

Just a quick one to share some news we're excited about - Bluegum Bushcraft's Lee and Zeah were busy filming in the bush a couple of weeks ago.

ABC's Life documentary series follows a group of kids as they grow up, and looks at what it means to be a kid in Australia these days (you might have seen the Life at 7 episodes, a couple of years ago). The kids are now nine years old, and for one of the Life at 9 episodes we took them into a beautiful bush location in Sydney's Royal National Park.

We did tracking, nature awareness, a bit of bush tucker and fire-making with the kids. They were an awesome bunch and we had a lot of fun.

Life at 9 will air on ABC sometime mid next year, and we'll let you know when we have the exact date.

What do you folks reckon about the new look website? And the logo?

We'd love to hear your feedback on both.

Been a while since we've posted online - been super busy with various programs, many run through other organisations.

Got a rites of passage camp coming up Nov 26th with Pathways Foundation - boys with their fathers, marking the transition to manhood. www.pathwaysfoundation.com.au

And about to do a kayak adventure schools program on the Kangaroo river...

News Flash! - Date Change

18/11/2012

We interrupt this bulletin to bring you a fast-breaking news flash...

We're going to swap round the first two programs of the January holiday.

The ReWild Adventure (11 - 16 yrs old) will now run in the first week, Jan 6th - 12th.

ReWild Your Child (6 - 10 yrs old) will now run Jan 13th - 19th.

We're doing this for a couple of reasons - firstly, it suited some folks better this way round and secondly, we think it will work better for there to be a bit of rest and integration time between the ReWild Adventure and ReWild Quest - for those participants who are doing both programs.

Sorry if that causes any inconvenience for some of you.

We look forward to seeing you in the bush!

Breaking News!

G'day folks,
First of all, we want to thank you for taking the time to read this message - all of us lead busy lives these days, so we appreciate having your attention for a moment.
We don't send out e-mails unless we have something important to tell you all, and right now we really do.

In fact, there are FOUR awesome things we want to share with you
(click on the links to find out more on our website):

1) Upcoming ReWild programs

Summer is nearly here and we're really excited to be able to say that Bluegum Bushcraft is running THREE ReWild programs this January:

6 - 12th Jan: ReWild Your Child
for 6-10 years old

13 - 19th Jan: ReWild Adventure
for 11-16 years old
training in skills of bushcraft and nature awareness becomes more focused, more overt.
lots of games and activities, but also going into more depth in the advanced skills and crafts that allow us to be at home in the wild.
more tracking, nature awareness and bushcraft skills
working towards becoming mature (ie wild) men and women; mentors and leaders for your tribe.

22 - 24th Jan: ReWild Quest
(ReWild Adventure is pre-requisite)
3 day, 2 night wilderness adventure for 11-16 year olds
putting into it practice, exploring, playing and being in wild nature

2) Price reduction for all ReWild programs

We're committed to providing an experience for your child that is not only transformative and enriching, but also affordable.
In the short time since we started running these programs, our community of Bluegum participants has grown beyond our expectations.
It is now large enough that we are pleased to be able to reduce the price of the program.

From now on, the cost per child will be $600 per week for all ReWild programs. This is a significant reduction from the previous price of $850!

Basically, we want to do what it takes to get your child or teenager out in the bush and empowering their journey of ReWilding.
That's what we're passionate about.
So we're really excited to find ourselves in a position where we can make it a bit easier, financially, for you hard-working parents.

3) New! ReWild Adventure and ReWild Quest

You guys have been asking for this for a while now, and we're stoked to be able to offer it. Two programs for older kids and teens (11 - 16 yr olds). Take everything we do in the ReWild Your Child programs, and turn it up a couple of notches. Taking bushcraft, survival and nature awareness to an even deeper level and in a more direct way. We will be getting into some of the more involved and advanced skills - you guys will have more skills than Bear Grylls before you know it. Those zombies won't know what hit 'em :c) See the website for more info. Click here.

4) Four new albums in the Photo Gallery

If you're new to Bluegum Bushcraft, check out these new photo galleries for a glimpse into some of the things we get up to. And if you were on the last ReWild program, have a look and see your beautiful faces on the web: congrats, you're now famous!

Again, thanks for taking the time to read this. We look forward to seing you in the bush!

Willem Dafoe in the Wild

Hi Bluegum Tribe,

Here's a bit of Bluegum in the media....
Bluegum Bushcraft's Lee Trew was the 'bushcraft and trapping consultant' for Australian movie The Hunter, starring Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill.

Lee made the primitive (ie non-metal) traps for the movie, and gave advice on where the traps should be set, how Willem's character might de-scent, where he might pitch his camp, and how he might move through the bush. He also gave advice on what gear he might carry (at one point he uses Lee's Tracker knife to gut a wallaby) and how he might go about finding and trapping the Tasmanian tiger.

The movie was released last month in the US, and Willem had some cool things to say about his experience of learning bushcraft, tracking and trapping, in this article from the Washington Post...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/willem-dafoe-answers-a-call-to-the-wild-in-the-hunter/2012/03/29/gIQAbMIRlS_story.html

Here's an excerpt:

“Your other performer becomes that trap, that snare you have to lay. It’s the same kind of call and response I have when doing a scene.” A local survivalist guide taught Dafoe how to use the traps as well as how to act in the wilderness.

“It was very useful to see his attitude of how he moved through the forest. It sounds a little suspicious, but it was really important. His whole attitude — it wasn’t like, ‘hello, tree’ — he had a sense of everything. He really knew how to melt in the environment. He had a confidence in the terrain and a love for it.”

That confidence rubbed off on Dafoe as he learned to set several traps and interact with his surroundings. “After a while, I could really see animal paths. It’s exciting, you know, to learn something. You’re transformed.”

The movie is well worth checking out - it's beautifully shot and acted, and the traps and bushcraft feature prominently. We can honestly say it's a whole lot more authentic in that respect than pretty much any feature film we've seen - they really went the distance in making sure the details were as realistic as possible. Good on 'em!

(And check out the Extras on the DVD for more on the bushcraft/trapping in the movie)

happy tracking,

The Tribe Experience Goes Mobile!

The pristine waters of just one of our local beaches...
Hi Tribe!

We're pleased to announce some exciting new changes to the Bluegum Tribe Experience.

From now on, this program will no longer be based on our bush property - we're going nomadic!

In the past we held activities mostly at Bluegum Bushcraft HQ, with occasional visits further afield. That worked well for most of you, but there were always a few people who told us they'd prefer not to have to camp.

After all, camping can be pretty far outside of some people's comfort zone, and an important part of the Tribe Experience is allowing you parents to get the holiday you've dreamed of - where you go with the whole family, but you actually get a chance to rest and get some solo time too.

Well, now you get to "choose your own adventure". The new Tribe Experience is where you  take your pick from the many local accommodation options in the Jervis Bay area. These range from simple family camping, through cosy B&Bs, all the way to full-on luxury beach houses. You choose!

There are website links on the Tribe Experience page to help you get more info on local accommodation, and you can always phone us for a chat if you want more help.

And it gets even better. We will come to collect the kids each day from your accommodation, and drop them back at the end of each day (or you can come out to meet us).
Picture
Jervis Bay is our oyster :c)
This new 'mobile' model also allows us to make full use of the many many gorgeous wilderness areas and national parks around the Bay. So the kids get even more awesome adventures in the bush, and learn about an even wider variety of ecosystems, and the bushcraft skills that apply to each. We get to visit special places off the beaten track, like hidden waterfalls and ancient caves, and see much more of the beautiful coast line this region has to offer.

Best of all, we're keeping the price of the program unchanged. So your kids get heaps more value for the same price as before.  We think that's pretty cool.

Have a look near the bottom of the Tribe Experience page for more details, or give us a ring if you have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you in the bush!
