Willem Dafoe in the Wild

Hi Bluegum Tribe,

Here's a bit of Bluegum in the media....
Bluegum Bushcraft's Lee Trew was the 'bushcraft and trapping consultant' for Australian movie The Hunter, starring Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill.

Lee made the primitive (ie non-metal) traps for the movie, and gave advice on where the traps should be set, how Willem's character might de-scent, where he might pitch his camp, and how he might move through the bush. He also gave advice on what gear he might carry (at one point he uses Lee's Tracker knife to gut a wallaby) and how he might go about finding and trapping the Tasmanian tiger.

The movie was released last month in the US, and Willem had some cool things to say about his experience of learning bushcraft, tracking and trapping, in this article from the Washington Post...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/willem-dafoe-answers-a-call-to-the-wild-in-the-hunter/2012/03/29/gIQAbMIRlS_story.html

Here's an excerpt:

“Your other performer becomes that trap, that snare you have to lay. It’s the same kind of call and response I have when doing a scene.” A local survivalist guide taught Dafoe how to use the traps as well as how to act in the wilderness.

“It was very useful to see his attitude of how he moved through the forest. It sounds a little suspicious, but it was really important. His whole attitude — it wasn’t like, ‘hello, tree’ — he had a sense of everything. He really knew how to melt in the environment. He had a confidence in the terrain and a love for it.”

That confidence rubbed off on Dafoe as he learned to set several traps and interact with his surroundings. “After a while, I could really see animal paths. It’s exciting, you know, to learn something. You’re transformed.”

The movie is well worth checking out - it's beautifully shot and acted, and the traps and bushcraft feature prominently. We can honestly say it's a whole lot more authentic in that respect than pretty much any feature film we've seen - they really went the distance in making sure the details were as realistic as possible. Good on 'em!

(And check out the Extras on the DVD for more on the bushcraft/trapping in the movie)

happy tracking,

The pristine waters of just one of our local beaches...
Hi Tribe!

We're pleased to announce some exciting new changes to the Bluegum Tribe Experience.

From now on, this program will no longer be based on our bush property - we're going nomadic!

In the past we held activities mostly at Bluegum Bushcraft HQ, with occasional visits further afield. That worked well for most of you, but there were always a few people who told us they'd prefer not to have to camp.

After all, camping can be pretty far outside of some people's comfort zone, and an important part of the Tribe Experience is allowing you parents to get the holiday you've dreamed of - where you go with the whole family, but you actually get a chance to rest and get some solo time too.

Well, now you get to "choose your own adventure". The new Tribe Experience is where you  take your pick from the many local accommodation options in the Jervis Bay area. These range from simple family camping, through cosy B&Bs, all the way to full-on luxury beach houses. You choose!

There are website links on the Tribe Experience page to help you get more info on local accommodation, and you can always phone us for a chat if you want more help.

And it gets even better. We will come to collect the kids each day from your accommodation, and drop them back at the end of each day (or you can come out to meet us).

Jervis Bay is our oyster :c)
This new 'mobile' model also allows us to make full use of the many many gorgeous wilderness areas and national parks around the Bay. So the kids get even more awesome adventures in the bush, and learn about an even wider variety of ecosystems, and the bushcraft skills that apply to each. We get to visit special places off the beaten track, like hidden waterfalls and ancient caves, and see much more of the beautiful coast line this region has to offer.

Best of all, we're keeping the price of the program unchanged. So your kids get heaps more value for the same price as before.  We think that's pretty cool.

Have a look near the bottom of the Tribe Experience page for more details, or give us a ring if you have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you in the bush!
