Hi,

A whole lot of people have been asking when the next tracking challenge will appear - so here it is. Enjoy!

Thanks for pestering us; things have been hectic here and sometimes it's helpful to get a prod (or several :) to remind us.

Lee was lucky enough to watch these tracks being made, and we'll be impressed if anyone can say what species made them, or what the sequence of events was.

Don't worry if it looks difficult - just give it your best shot.

(For size reference, it's the rear windscreen of a car, in case that isn't obvious.)

We'll also be posting an easier tracking challenge soon - for folks who are new to tracking.

And remember, all entries qualify you for a chance to win a Mora 'Clipper' carbon-steel Swedish bushcraft knife. They're the business.

We look forward to hearing from you. Have fun!

blue skies,

Just to give it a go, guessing it was a medium size bird (magpie?) flapping its wings when trying to get something from the window, probably an insect hovering or walking on the window? I say this because of the lines coming up and down but the biggest ones being the border of the feathers when striking...

Marcos, well done mate - you got it!

Excellent deduction/guess :c)

It was an adult female maggie flying up to perch on the roof of the car, then flying down to pick at the ground.

The tracks on the right side and middle are the up-flight. The top left are the down-flight.

Send my your address via e-mail, and I'll send you the knife.

Nice one!

Lee

Ok, my first thought is, one of those scenes where you have some juvinile sulphur creasted cockatoos having a wrestle whilst hanging out on the roof of the car, as teenagers do! so i see big feather lines as they slip down the window and some claw marks just below the midline on the left that are slipping down. the feather lines seem like quite strong feathers which makes me think the bird is big.

Hi Camilla,

Good tracking and good hypothesis. You had the size pretty right and you definitely made sense of what was going on in the track.

If it wasn't for Marcos, you'd have won two knives by now.
